What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown, sometimes called a tooth cap or tooth crown, is used to restore cracked teeth, crooked teeth, and teeth with cavities or tooth decay. The dental crown covers the entire tooth, like a cap, and is permanently cemented into place.
About Porcelain Dental Crowns
There are many materials that a dentist can choose from to create a dental crown. In most cases, Dr. Izadi and Dr. Rafat choose porcelain dental crowns because of their superior esthetics and long-term durability.
Benefits of Porcelain Dental Crowns
- Metal free – no discoloration along the gum like conventional metal dental caps
- Natural looking – porcelain dental crowns are made of fine layers of ceramic material, to mimic tooth enamel
- Long lasting – porcelain dental crowns are highly durable and stain resistant
Dental Crown Procedure Overview
A dental crown can be placed in one to three visits depending on your specific situation. The first step is to remove any existing tooth caps or fillings and prepare the tooth for the new crown. An impression of the tooth is taken and sent to a dental laboratory where the permanent dental crown will be made. During the interim, Dr. Izadi and Dr. Rafat may place a temporary tooth cap.
Once the permanent dental crown has arrived from the laboratory, the dentist will try it on for fit and color. We will make any minor adjustments and then secure the crown with a special adhesive. Caring for dental crowns is very similar to the care of natural teeth. Routine visits to the dentist will ensure that your dental crown is stable and long lasting.
