At Valley Dental Health, we think every day is a great day to recognize the importance of good oral hygiene, but in October, we join the American Dental Hygienists’ Association in celebrating National Dental Hygiene Month.
The American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) and the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company team up to spread the message that keeping your mouth healthy is important for many reasons. This year the theme is the Daily Four:
- ONE: brushing twice a day
- TWO: flossing once a day
- THREE: rinsing with mouthwash
- FOUR: chewing sugar free gum after meals
Many patients are surprised when their dental hygienist recommends chewing sugar free gum after a meal, but scientific studies have proven that this can help to reduce the presence of harmful bacteria, the kind that often lead to tooth decay and gum disease. The important thing to remember is to always choose sugar free gum, and one showing the ADA seal of approval. The same goes for mouthwash: rinsing provides the oral health benefit of reducing harmful bacteria that can remain on surfaces in the mouth and lead to problems. Again, look for the ADA seal of approval on an antiseptic mouthwash that will be a helpful part of your daily oral hygiene routine.
Your dental hygienist at Valley Dental Health will always take the time to make individualized recommendations for keeping your oral health in good condition between visits to our Hunt Valley dentist office. Gum disease and tooth decay will affect most patients at some point in their lives, but routine dental care and a good oral hygiene routine can go a long way toward minimizing damage that requires extensive treatment to restore health.
Understanding the important link between oral health and overall health is also the key for many patients when it comes to maintaining a healthy smile. Your daily brushing, flossing, rinsing and chewing can be the foundation for lasting dental health.
