Anxiety and stress of the dentist can be so debilitating that people refuse to see a dentist about oral health concerns. Some people suffer from intense gag reflex, jaw pain, or severe anxiety, limiting their ability to receive the dental health care they need. Ignoring your oral health can lead to serious medical conditions and lengthy, expensive procedures.
Hunt Valley family dentist Dr. Dr. Roham Rafat is certified in Maryland to administer IV sedation to patients at our Cockeysville dental office. Dr. Rafat offers experienced sedation dentistry services to relax you and alleviate your fears during your dental implant procedure or periodontal treatment.
It is important to note that sedation dentistry is different than local anesthesia. Anesthesia is an injection that blocks pain signals from reaching the brain, resulting in numbness of the area where the anesthetic was administered. Sedation Dentistry is the use of pharmaceuticals to calm your anxiety and stress.
Sedation Methods
Dr. Rafat offers three different sedation dentistry options. Each option works in slightly different ways. All three sedation methods will enable you to feel anxiety and pain free during a procedure, allowing you to receive the oral health care you need.
Oral Sedation- prescription medication is administered and ingested prior to your visit. You will feel relaxed and at ease while maintaining your consciousness. No needles necessary- and budget friendly. When using oral sedation, it takes about 30-45 minutes for the sedation to set in, it is often recommended you take the oral sedation prior to arriving at the dentist.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)- you will inhale gas through a small cannula placed over the nose, relaxing you while enabling you remain fully alert and responsive. Nitrous oxide is safe and effective and commonly used in dentistry techniques. The gas is only effective while wearing the mask, allowing you to return to your daily routine as soon as the procedure is complete.
IV Sedation- carefully controlled in the office setting and will settle you into a light sleep during your surgery so you won’t feel a thing. IV Sedation is easily controlled and will be expertly administered by a certified Maryland dentist. Because the medication is administered intravenously, it will work almost immediately.. IV Sedation can only be administered by trained and certified dentist like Dr. Rafat.
Sedation Dentistry has proven to be safe and effective. During your dental treatment or procedure, Dr. Rafat and his team monitor you closely to ensure your comfort and safety. Dr. Rafat will analyze your overall health and medical history before recommending IV Sedation for your dental procedure.
